Noble vs. tudei kava, explained

Not all kava is the same. 'Noble' and 'tudei' describe two very different groups of kava varieties, and only one is the kind you want.

The short answer
Noble kava refers to the traditional varieties people have drunk regularly for generations. Tudei ('two-day') kava refers to varieties with longer-lasting effects and more side effects like nausea. Vanuatu restricts tudei exports. Look for noble kava.

Noble kava

"Noble" is the name for the kava varieties that Pacific communities have traditionally drunk day to day. They're prized for a pleasant, predictable experience and are what most reputable kava sellers use.

Tudei kava

"Tudei" comes from "two day," a nod to how long its effects can linger. Tudei varieties are associated with more nausea and next-day grogginess, and they contain a different balance of compounds. Vanuatu's Kava Act restricts the export of tudei kava for that reason.

How to tell

Reputable brands and kava bars state that they use noble kava. If a product doesn't say, ask, or choose one that does.

Why it matters for canned kava

When you buy a ready-to-drink kava, you're trusting the brand's sourcing. Stick with brands that are open about where their kava comes from.
