The short answer
Ashwagandha is the adaptogen with the most sleep-related research, mostly small studies. Reishi is popular but less studied. Many 'sleep' products also include non-adaptogens like magnesium and L-theanine. None replace good sleep habits or a doctor's advice.

Ashwagandha

Some small studies suggest ashwagandha may modestly improve sleep quality. It's the best-studied adaptogen for sleep, though the research is still limited.

Reishi

Reishi mushroom shows up in many evening drinks and powders. Human research on sleep is limited.

Safety first

Don't combine sleep supplements with sleep medication, alcohol or other sedatives without talking to your doctor. Skip them during pregnancy unless your doctor approves.

The basics still matter most

Consistent sleep and wake times, a cool and dark room, and less caffeine and alcohol later in the day have the strongest evidence of anything here.
